- Immediate effect of Singing on Autonomic Functions and Pulmonary Function Parameters in School Going Classical Singers and Non Singers - An Observational Study

AIM: This study aimed to find the immediate effect of singing on autonomic functions and pulmonary functions parameters in school classical singers.Objectives: 1) To compare the autonomic and pulmonary functions in children singers before and after the singing class. 2) To compare the differences in autonomic and pulmonary functions in children singers with non singers of the same age group.
Material and Method: A total of 20 healthy children of age group 9 to 12 years were included in the study. Autonomic parameters were assessed and pulmonary function tests were performed before and immediately after singing in singers. The data was compared with the non singing group who were not habitual singers.
Results: The data was analyzed using SPSS (windows version 13.0) both age and gender was well matched in both the groups. The PEFR (peak expiratory flow rate) showed statistically significance (p = 0.05) between both the groups. Results within the group demonstrated statistically significant in FEV1 (force expiratory volume in one second) (p=0.004) and PEFR (p = < .001)
Conclusion: The results of present study demonstrated significant difference in FEV1 and PEFR in singing group immediately after singing and better PEFR in the singing group was found when compared to non singing group.

Text line segmentation is an essential pre-processing stage for off-line handwriting recognition in many Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems. It is an important step, as inaccurately segmented text lines will cause errors in the subsequent recognition stage. Text line segmentation of handwritten documents is still one of the most complicated problems in developing a reliable OCR. The nature of handwriting styles makes the process of text line segmentation very challenging. This paper provides a means of text line segmentation using Vertical Strip Projection based method. In this paper, the document is divided into vertical strips of appropriate width. Strip-wise horizontal histograms are then computed and the relationship of the peak valley points is used for line segmentation. Though the global horizontal projection method works efficiently for printed documents, it becomes highly unreliable when used in case of unconstrained handwritten text because of many factors like variable skew, touching and overlapping lines. The proposed method provides much improved and reliable results when compared to global horizontal profile method in case of skewed and variable sloping lines. Segmentation accuracy of 83% is achieved for handwritten Kannada text using the proposed method.Keywords

During campus Interviews, the student's cognition is the Employers desideratum. They have incertitude regarding the same due to the scholastic system which is exam-oriented. It thus is an obligation on the teacher's part to ascertain that students get more proactive during the classroom sessions. Problem-based learning (PBL) could be an effective alternative tool for boosting their interest and involvement in technical education. As Symbiosis Institute of Technology is an autonomous body, the freedom of adopting a different teaching method was used. In this study, the first week of the academic semester was converted into a week full of PBL activities instead of regular classes on a cohort of students from diverse background. This was done to understand if students could apply pre-requisite knowledge that they gained through regular tutelage. To test the usefulness of the concept of PBL in technical education, few activities were planned to introduce students to new concepts allied with the course structure of that semester. The study showed that students had limitations in the application of prerequisite knowledge and 10% could solve the problem completely. 62% of students were successful in doing new tasks using the PBL technique. 8% of students were able to reach to correct solution. Thus, student engagement can be boosted by the use of PBL pedagogy in technical education.Keywords
